September 27

Charter Champion Pecha Kucha presentations will start on Tuesday, October 1st.

Monday is Orange Shirt Day, which commemorates the residential school experience and honours survivors.  Please read the letter from Kamloops Residential School given to you on Friday and answer the reflective questions on the back.  We will discuss this as part of our work around Orange Shirt Day on Monday.  Feel free to show your thinking by annotating the letter itself (underlining, marking an making notes in the margins).

Our PE team was in today to remind grade 9 students that you will need to be dressed for the weather to have PE outside next week.

September 25

Terry Fox Run - Friday, Sept 27 - A $2 donation is encouraged.

Charter Champions - We continue to work on our scripts as well as the Google Slides presentation that will play as you delivered your talk.  Remember these slides should be very visual - little to no text on them.  Aim to visually tell the story through photos that you are verbally telling through your talk.

Current Events - We have also been working on preparing a Current Event story for discussion.  Many of our conversations have centred on what types of stories make for interesting discussion and analysis.  Some of the qualities we have noticed include:

  • personally relevant
  • timely (everyone is talking about it)
  • multiple opinions/perspectives on the issue
Don't forget - reading and/or watching the news will help you connect the ideas we talk about in class with how these concepts live in the real world!

Charter Champions

Charter Champions Pecha Kucha - Students have chosen an individual for this task and have started their research.  Remember to focus this research on the individual's actions and achievements with regard to individual rights.  Once you have completed your research you can begin your script for your Pecha Kucha presentation.   Don't forget about the written example I showed you on Friday if you are interested in how to structure your script.

Sept 16

Photo Day is Tuesday, Sept 17!

Today in Humanities we looked at the issue of voting age in Canada's elections.  Our chief elections officer has suggested that perhaps the voting age should be lowered to 16.  Students viewed a panel of experts who had a range of perspectives to help inform their opinion, then they organized their ideas into a written response.  This was an in-class piece of writing and students handed it in at the end of class.

We continue to discuss the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Currently, we are analyzing a case study involving curfew laws in Alberta that are targeted at youth.  Students, please make sure you have completed the table on page 3
